Questions & Answers (Q&A):

Which version of Windows XP do I need?

You MUST have your Windows XP upgrade to Service Pack 1 (SP1) for USB 2.0 to function. Without SP1 you would most likely receive error messages such as:
"The Generic USB hub is a Hi-Speed USB device and will function at reduced speed when plugged into a non-Hi-Speed port"
Or
"Hi-Speed USB device plugged into non Hi-Speed USB hub. A Hi-Speed USB device is plugged into a non Hi-Speed USB hub"

After you have upgraded to Service Pack 1 (SP1); then you will have to install the above driver for Windows XP SP1 to obtain the best performance.

(*If you already have Service Pack 2 (SP2) or Service Pack 3 (SP3) installed, you may just simply use embedded Microsoft Windows Native Drivers.)

Why does my system detect the card as “VIA USB Enhanced Host Controller” and not “VIA USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller”?

Basically, "VIA USB Enhanced Host Controller" and "VIA USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller" are exactly the same. They both are running at USB 2.0 speed.

How do I know if my PC has USB 2.0?

You can identify whether your PC has Hi-Speed USB 2.0 very easily. Just open "Device Manager" and expand the "Universal Serial Bus controllers" section. There should be any of the following shown with the word "Enhanced" in it; such as,
"Standard Enhanced....."
"PCI Class USB 2.0 Enhanced....."
etc...

Windows 98 systems may use a different name, because Hi-Speed USB 2.0 drivers in Windows 98 systems are not provided directly from Microsoft. Windows Me, 2000, and XP gets their software driver updates through Windows Update.

After installing the PU222 or PU223 in an older system, why do my USB 2.0 devices still run at USB 1.0 or 1.1 speed?

If you are running the PU222 or PU223 in an older system that has USB 1.0 or USB 1.1 on the motherboard, you MUST first "disable" the USB function under the Motherboard’s BIOS; i.e. disable the on-board USB and only use PU222 or PU223 for all USB connections.

How do I know I have the right drivers installed?

Go to "Device Manager" and expand the "Universal Serial Bus controllers" section, you will see the following similar host controllers installed:

USB Root Hub
VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller
VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller
VIA USB Enhanced Host Controller
